Windy City Here I Come
Hopefully most of you are enjoying your Presidents' Day somewhere other than work or class. I on the other hand am celebrating Pres. Day here in the office with a nice chik-fil-a chicken biscuit. Grace, my best office friend, has returned from her week of vacation, which has put some brightening effects on this rainy Monday morning. She has been here so long that I think she gets close to 6 weeks vacation. So, I will be heading to Chicago at 4pm EST today for some mind stimulating training. I have checked the weather and it looks as if the high temps will be in the upper 30's. Not too bad for this time of year. I shall return on Thursday night at 951pm EST...Just in time to enjoy my Friday at the office. I will try my hardest to get a windy city blog or two in while I am up there. No promises though. So, please tune in on Friday b/c I will be announcing week three's FOW. In the meantime, I would love to hear everyone's favorite Chicago moment, story, memory, or something associated with Chicago. My favorite Chicago moment...I have 2 of them. The first has to be my trip up to the corporate offices for a little corporate orientation. The company kept us over for the weekend so we could go play in the city on that Saturday, which happened to be my birthday. I had never been to the Windy City, but as some of you might know I am a life long Cubs fan. Well it turns out that the Cubbies are in town playing the Brewers for a little North Side afternoon ball game at Wrigley Field. The game was sold out, and tickets were going for $75 each. Greg Maddux is on the hill and he is going for his 298 win. After a delicious deep dish pizza at Gino's we take the train up to Wrigleyville. It was everything that I ever dreamed of. We decided to head to the Cubby Bear to watch the game since there weren't many tickets available. The game was just about to start when I decided I would pay anything to be in the game. As I went outside I held my finger up for one ticket. Not a minute had passed, and a guy looked at me and said $75. I replied back, $30. The guy acted like I was crazy, and started walking away. My hopes and dreams of Wrigley were fading quickly. Then I screamed at the guy $40, he said $45...Deal. So, I got in the game, didn't even go to my seat. Hung out with some old guy, and watched Maddux shut the Brewers down. 3-0 Cubs win!!!! It was the most magnificent moment ever. I was speechless when I saw the ivy in the outfield. Everyone has to go to Wrigley Field sometime. Alright, a little long winded b/c I was caught up in the moment, but memory 2 of Chicago. Andre "The Hawk" Dawson. Cubs Right Fielder in the 80's. I remember one game he got thrown out and he threw every possible thing in the dugout onto the field. All the fans were throwing their drinks on the field. It reminded me a lot like the student section at Auburn after a last second field goal to win the game. Enough, now your turn for Chicago memories, stories, moments, etc.

I must admit mine also is a Cubbies memory. I have been to Wrigley about 4 times and each time has been a unique experience. The best, though, was when the Cubs were not having a good season. They were playing the Rockies and the game had been just that for the cubs. around the sixth inning, The cubs pitcher threw two back to back homers for a total of three runs. The releiver brought in to replace this chump threw a walk and then a homer. He was replaced by yet another releiver whose first pitch was a homer. The fans, in a fit of rage, trashed the field, postponing the game to get the field cleaned up and playable again. Not the Cubs finest day, but one that stands out in my memory as the epitome of wrigley field.

So I'm in my 1989 Astro Van crusing to a cubs game with Trey and Parrish. For some reason, people think they can just pull out in front of the van because, well, it is an 89 Astro Van. But I would have none of it. The guy driving the car is slightly upset with me. Since traffic is pretty backed up we aren't moving. He takes this opportunity to leave his car and tell me a little bit about how he feels about my 89 Astro Van and me. I just looked at him and gave him the old thumbs up sign. Beautful people there in Chi-town.
So many Chi-town memories...Alright, so I have never been to Chicago. Who cares? I grew up watching baseball on TV. When you live in Jackson, MS you have two choices...be a Braves fan from watching TBS or be a Cubs fan by watching WGN. When Harry Caray sings "Take me out to the ball game" and you can tell that the Vodka is starting to kick in...thats when you know that the Cubs are your team. Rick Sutcliffe and Ryan Sandberg were the greatest Cubbies ever.
